Another year – another battle ensued. Tonsley win the toss again and get out of the traps unscathed. P.Bruce fights through his first ball nerves and records a commendable (34). However, there were really only two other batsman to bother the scorers on this day. P.Flood, regularly the Tornado danger man (unlike his namesake A. Flood who is more the Tornado danger mouse) [Ed.: cheeky ****], was caught on (43) and A.Dutton also caught by G. Eckerold in his fidgeting forties on (45). The rest barely showed up on the scorecard but again were fine ambassadors to the game and really showed the youngsters how sport ought (not?) to be played. For the Kites, G. Eckerold shone with the ball 3-28 off 5 overs.
The target of 178 was virtually the same as 2008 and as with the previous year, the Kites lost their opener in the first couple of overs. Was this to be the upset year? G.Eckerold hung in for a creditable 51 and D. Speer struck a quick fire (47). It seemed the dogged determination of the Tonsley bowling was paying off – A. Moxon proudly held the ball aloft on delivery of a memorable fifer – 5-32 off 9 overs (though I am sure there is a bowling limit of just 7 in a 35 over game!!! – the skipper’s maths not great? Second last over this year but the same result – still the crowd were pleased with the athletic display and sporting contest as ever. Once more unto the breach, dear friends…
