The Tornados won the toss and elected to bat and immediately threw the pairing of P.Bruce and R.Bruce into the fray. It was not long until P.Bruce was beating his retreat back to the pavilion. You could not have scripted it – A Diamond Duck. First ball, a feisty delivery from A. Berry, rose steeply, struck the shoulders of Paul’s bat and looped up and into his brother J.Bruce’s gloves behind. Not a great start for the tourists. P. Flood made a dashing 29 only to be given in what has become a traditional dodgy LBW decision which doesn’t go down well with the batsman. S. Pavitt sees the ball well and puts up a decent fight as does James MacDonald (31) and Eddy I (25). The rest are not worth a mention but they showed great spirit and fortitude against a hail of bullets…all in the spirit of the game. S. Pavitt eventually secures his half century and carries his bat on 55 Not Out.
Protecting a total of 176 was not beyond the imagination. Especially when S. Pavitt and A. Moxon reduced the home side to 0-2. However the Kite’s middle order gained stability with S. Grigg (51), J. Bruce (30) and D. Speer (22). However, the game did cruise into the last over which delighted the assembled crowd. James Bruce was the pick of the Tornado’s bowlers with 3-37 off 6 overs. Alas not the Tornados were on the wrong side of victory.
