Tonsley Golf Society – Get in the Hole Challenge 2009

Saturday 28th February saw the inaugural Tonsley Golf Society meeting tee off at Belmont Golf Club. The stench of Chicken Tikka Masala stuck in the Herefordshire air like a Beijing smog. Tales of Handicap ‘fixing’ circulated as the group eagerly waited for Mikey to arrive from his sortie into Wales where he had been goading the taffs after their defeat by the French the previous evening.

The Tonsley Golf Society Get in the Hole Challenge 2009 was played in Stableford format with a competition for pairs on both days and an overall individual competition. Both days saw a real mix of golf – the sublime and the ridiculous. The Belmont Lodge Golf Club proved an excellent venue, not only for the golf, but also to enjoy the Six Nations games in the bar and dinner in the evening.

Particular note should be made of the following:

  • Lovers whose preparation for the weekend included borrowing a set clubs, pair of shoes and a jacket – but still managed to turn up without a putter,
  • Rupert who described himself as a beaver – reassuring everybody that was as a result of him spending too much time in the trees,
  • Ant coaching his partner Dan – “I’ll give you an hour of my time, but if you mess up after that…”,
  • Joe’s drive off the 1st on the second day and hitting the marker pin,
  • the examiner who gave Ben Cuttle his Grade 5 trombone - he must have been technically deaf,
  • Rob (Mr Callaway) with “all the gear and no idea”,
  • Mike “The Bandit” Brotherton who plays the nice guy, but is shy with his gimme’s,
  • Pete who has received a letter from the Club Captain’s car insurance company seeking funds to repair the damage he caused off the 10th (not just once, but twice),
  • John Southall whose swing is described as “over-wristy” by Pete,
  • Floody’s air shot medley in the trees on the 18th,
  • Mikey who seemed to enjoy driving the buggy more than playing golf,
  • Nick Moxon who ensured Woolfy got no sleep as a result of his snoring,
  • Woolfy (who was tired) and was repeatedly heard as saying “I have never been round a golf course in under 120 shots”,
  • Al Muir purchasing a new putter the day after he returns from Belmont as he realizes he putts like Julian Clary,
  • Dan Potter who with very little prior experience showed everyone that Golf is not that hard after all,
  • and Mark Goodall (below) who deservedly won the Tonsley Jacket after a solid display of golf.

A cracking weekend, and quite possibly the first of many similar outings to follow.
