Rob Bruce and the Cape Wrath Ultra – The Cape Crew(saders)!
Another year, another outrageous endurance challenge, and the mysterious return of the work crew in orange.

Having apparently learned absolutely nothing from the Dragon’s Back Race in 2024, Tonsley founding father and ultra-running legend Rob Bruce was back for more punishment in 2025.
This time, the challenge was the Cape Wrath Ultra – an extraordinary eight-day, 400-kilometre wilderness adventure through some of Scotland’s wildest and most remote landscapes. Mountains, bogs, river crossings and relentless climbs stood between Rob and the finish line at Cape Wrath.
But Rob wasn’t the only one heading north. Chingu stuck to him all week… big shout out to the Scotland support crew.
However, on Day Four, in glorious Scottish sunshine, three suspicious-looking workmen came round a corner and down a hill, dressed in fluorescent orange, hard hats and carrying an enormous speaker.
The Cape Crew(saders) had arrived!
Unannounced, uninvited and entirely undeterred by the remoteness of the Highlands, the Tonsley madness had once again descended upon an unsuspecting endurance event.
The bagpipes thundered across the glens (this time at least geographically appropriate!), followed by a carefully curated soundtrack featuring I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) and Whisky Roll, providing Rob with an unmistakable musical welcome.
Throughout the day, the Cape Crew(saders) pursued their quarry through breathtaking Highland scenery, appearing at spectacular roadside locations to deliver encouragement, questionable entertainment and considerable noise.
For Rob, battling his way through another monumental physical challenge, the unexpected appearances provided welcome moments of hilarity. For fellow competitors, the orange-clad apparitions must have seemed increasingly surreal.
And then, by mid-afternoon, their mission accomplished, the three mysterious workmen disappeared as suddenly as they had arrived.
The music faded, the Highland tranquillity returned, and the orange flare was extinguished.
Until the next time, perhaps…
Because wherever Rob Bruce runs, the Tonsley madness is never very far behind.
