Rob Bruce and the Dragon’s Back – and the Brecon Boyos!
An epic endurance challenge, a legendary Tonsley founder and two highly suspicious road workers.
The Dragon’s Back Race is no ordinary endurance event. Widely regarded as one of the world’s toughest mountain races, it takes competitors on a gruelling six-day journey down the mountainous spine of Wales, from Conwy Castle in the north to Cardiff Castle in the south. Covering approximately 380 kilometres, with 17,400 metres of ascent, it demands extraordinary stamina, determination and a healthy disregard for personal comfort.
Enter Rob Bruce, one of the four founding fathers of Tonsley Events, ultra-running legend and a man seemingly incapable of recognising when enough is enough.
By Day Five of the 2024 race, Rob had an unexpected encounter with two suspicious-looking road workers in the Brecon Beacons.
In truly Tonsley style… clad head-to-toe in fluorescent orange, complete with hard hats, Joe and Ginny had meticulously studied the route maps the previous evening, plotting six roadside rendezvous as the race criss-crossed remote mountain roads.
Armed with an enormous speaker and absolutely no regard for the tranquillity of the Welsh countryside, the pair announced their presence with bagpipes booming across the mountains at maximum decibels.
As Rob approached, the soundtrack switched to some of his favourite tunes, providing much-needed encouragement, entertainment and possibly considerable confusion amongst fellow competitors.
Updates
Throughout the day, the orange-clad duo materialised at five further locations, delivering musical morale boosts, enthusiastic cheering and increasingly improbable roadside appearances.
Their antics lifted not only Rob’s spirits but those of the exhausted runners around him.
And then, as suddenly as they had appeared, the mysterious highway maintenance team vanished into the Welsh hills, never to be seen again.
Well, perhaps not never…
