Rome
2004 | | | |
A memorable trip to Rome brought much of the Tonsley
loyalty together to witness Woolfy and Henri wed. Shouts go out to the Staff's
crew, the Tonsley locals, Time Teamers and Totty representatives who all showed
up and provided much entertainment. Lasting memories,
seen from this angle, will include a chaotic night in an outstanding back street
Pizzeria. A booking for 30 diners with 70 actually turning up! Two speeches from
Anton and Joe somehow managed to place Woolfy on a pedestal a rank above James
Bond.
The
night pushed on in Campo di Fiori where Taily met the love of his life (see photographic
evidence below), Giles demonstrated his fluency in Gibberish to rid the crew of
in-your-face rose-sellers, Johnny Southall brought them all back again by actually
buying a bunch from one such seller and Anton saw the sun come up before finding
his hotel room. A moment of genius saw Pedro sitting
cross-legged on a traffic cop's platform in the middle of Rome's busiest traffic
intersection, much to the amusement of the hundreds passing by but less so to
the traffic cop on the pavement who went straight for his whistle! The photo joins
the hall of fame in Peter's Friends. Many
will remember the morning with Taily Tours, perhaps not for historic interest
or even the considerably extended route to lunch but probably the new pins on
the Tonsley Totty map that Rome's stunning monuments provided sending the TT army
ever closer to a three figure population! If you haven't visited for a while,
you'll find at least 20 new troopers here!

The
wedding itself was a beautiful, simple service in a church dating back to 400AD
(just 6 and a half years after Woolfy was born). Mark reportedly took Woolfy's
heart rate a couple of minutes before the bride entered the church... a staggering
326 - well done that man! The Robertis went on to provide a palatial celebration
for 180 guests. A quiet nod to the Woolfman for arranging that the three dining
rooms be painted in the three Tonsley colours.

The night rolled on into Campo di Fiori
once more. The swarm of rose-sellers descended once again and Giles adopted a
new tact in leading one in false promise on a 10 minute walk to the cashpoint,
only to pocket the cash, turn round and thank him for his company before finally
seeing him off with another tirade of Gibberish (and purchasing an hour later
from one of his colleagues)! Such appalling behaviour was to continue when he
joined Floody for a bath in the middle of the square (see photo below). Another
late one for everyone as the clock struck 3 and the assembled party in mourning
suits were the last crowd partying in Rome's busiest square as the market stalls
were setting up for the morning

friends gathered the night before the big day | We
retired with a pint of water, two nurofen, and happy memories. To the new Mr &
Mrs Woolf, thank you! You
can tell your story or just join the general banter on the Noticeboard. |

And
just in from Camillo, Henri's brother: An
e-mail from the new Mrs Woolf´s brother! Dear
Tonsley Events, thank you for illuminating me. I entered your colourful website
expecting to see a few photos of the smiling bride and, lo and behold, I discover
the full range of my new brother-in-law´s pasttimes, including dressing
up as Father Christmas in April. No matter,
the vows have been sworn, he seems a nice chap and his friends are a lot of fun
(loved the photo of Peter sitting in the middle of Piazza Venezia). The on-duty
policeman must have lost his Christmans bonus for letting an Englishman lower
the tone of the square quite so enthusiastically. Mr
and Mrs Woolf know where to find me next time a Tonsley member is visiting Mexico!
Please do get in touch. Camillo Roberti
